When I asked Mrs. Reyna Lopez, “what would you want the world to know about your village and your coffee coop members?” She responded: “I would like for the world to know that we are a group of hard working and independent business women that grows some very amazing coffee”. And I said: “I’ll do that”.
Mrs. Lopez is the President of the coffee coop base-group “28th of September”, in the village of Las Vegas, La Paz. Established in 1995, this small group of women coffee farmers grows some of the best coffee in the region of Montecillos in Marcala, Honduras. They consistently grow outstanding quality coffee, strictly follow best practices for growing, harvesting, and processing organic beans, and meet all the requirements and expectations of their mother co-op COMUCAP, one of our key coffee partners.
Following our vision to change the coffee world through direct and fair trade, in February of 2022 we met with this base-group in their village and made a monetary donation that will be used as “seed money” for improvements and enhancement of capabilities of the group. This donation was a result of our 2021 revenue and our commitment to a world where everyone can live with dignity, love, and respect.
We are not here for just roasting amazing coffee; we are here to truly make a change in the world. Join us!!
Helping the World one partnership at a time!
During our visits to our farmer partners in February of 2022 we were able to meet and have coffee with some leaders of the farmer community in Copán. Mr. Marco Antonio Márquez, Don Guillermo Faros, and Marcos Tulio Mejía are all founding members of COAGRICSAL, a Coffee Co-op in Copán, Honduras. COGRICSAL started as a small coffee organization with 10 founding members that many years ago decided to meet under the shade of a big tree with the dream of helping each other by organizing. Today COAGRICSAL has grown to a community of more than 2,000 small farmers. More than 90% of the coffee farms are between 2-4 acres of land.
These formidable men took the time to meet with us to share amazing stories. They have been growing coffee since the 1960s and they explained to us the current situation and the challenges that Honduran farmers are facing. One of the stories that I heard was about the devastation caused by hurricanes Eta and Iota in Nov of 2020. Mr Marcos Tulio didn’t just lose his harvest, but he also lost his home. In 2021, Don Marcos had to decide between continue recovering his house or invest in his coffee plantation. Another story from Don Guillermo is how, although the current market price of green coffee beans is high, the cost of materials, tools, and consumables for coffee farms has doubled in less than one year making it near impossible to prepare the farms for the next production cycle. Stories and challenges like these ones are what motivate us to do what we do. Based on our vision to change the world, we provided a financial donation to select farmers of COAGRICSAL to aid in financial losses caused by natural disasters and financial pressures from the world economy.
